Discussion: Strong response to our “big wolf hunt” article

10.05.2024

The wolf is a protected species – and our readers gave us feedback on how they think Switzerland should deal with Canis lupus.

ALICE SCHNELL, FRANCE

In a prosperous, scientifically literate country like ours, it is sad to see our decision-making being clouded by short-sightedness and conflicts of interest. Large predators have an invaluable environmental role to play, but still we hunt them. Wolves lead to healthy forests and help to boost biodiversity.

PETAR TRIXIE, NEW ZEALAND

Shameful. Human greed strikes again.

JEAN-JACQUES MARCHAND, FRANCE

Wolves again! Evidently, the eco-brigade prefer dead sheep. Our government should prioritise livelihoods over the sensibilities of urban tree-huggers.

GILLES QUARTENOUD, PORTUGAL

Are wolves good for tourism or agriculture? Do they keep children safe? Do they help to keep wild boar numbers down? Do they contribute to GDP or any other of Switzerland’s vital interests? Or do they just kill sheep? We already have plenty of good reasons to eliminate them.

PATRICIA EVRARD, FRANCE

Well done to all those who carry out such difficult but vital work to protect habitats endangered by modern farming and our insatiable appetite for food. Nature is at the front line in this battle – and if we protect it, it will protect us. Children will learn to respect nature if they are taught at school about the wonderfully brave and determined work of such organisations.

“Swiss Review” in general and the January edition in particular

JOE KOLLER, CHICAGO, USA

Congratulations on an excellent magazine which always brings joy and happiness when received. However, the cover story about the sexual abuse by members of the Catholic clergy in Switzerland is shocking. Being a practising Catholic, I am fully aware of this shameful behavior. However, I question why you chose it as the cover story. Looking forward to the next issue.
